we seem to have a few members that think after reading all the advice to improve that they should immediately should be playing as well as the best players in the game. so i thought i would start this thrd so they could read how long it takes to become very good. last yr when tw wii went on line my rank got as high as 110 .granted i didnt know how to use the club tuner but i dont think it would have made a difference. it took me all of 09 to get to the level of play that im at now. i was terrible when i started playing on the wii. it took me a year to get it all together by playing and losing to the best. many hrs spent practicing. i would appreciate you all weighing in here so that new members can see that its not an overnight improvement but a steady work in progress.thx

Great idea Dad. And iIf anyone wants to know how poorly I played when I started, all they have to do is look at my SIM record. While I currently sit at 18, and have been as high as 12, my 200+ losses clearly show that in the early days with the game I lost 3 of every 4 games I played. It was frustrating but I play to have fun so I just kept plugging away. With the help of the great guys and gals I have met through this game I was able to improve. This, thanks to guys like Dad, Jokker, Makeitso, NCD, David Duval and especially Jeffro who freely share their knowledge of the game. This, not the great skill and records of the players, is what makes this community such a vibrant and welcoming one. And once I found WiiGA, WOW. Now a once awful player who took the name LongHowie can play with the best in the game under settings much more challenging and rewarding than SIM play (even though I will still throw a high score from time to time). Ain't it great!

well i started with tw 04 didnt care about rankings and still dont. i play for the fun and to get better when i started i was in the mid 60s to mid 70s wondering if ill ever make a sub 60 rd. And no its not a over night thing that you will be shooting like the top players. Now in tw 10 thru every thing i read and all the help i have gotten i now shoot in the mid to upper 50s but still have my bad rds. im not with the top players and if i get good enough to be there ill be happy but im happy with what i done so far and it can only get better. i started in the top 30 for a while but thats to much work for me. this league was the dga but they turned it into what it is today and how its grown. I like the chat room where you can go and rib other players and go back and fourth at each other nothin serious all in fun. i dont play many sims games any more only for practice and to work out the kinks for a up coming match thats why im 128-58 lvl 14 and that might be where i end up. when tw 2011 comes out my goal is lvl 20.

i still remember my first offline round of about 10 over par. followed by an even par round. after that i suppose i got up to a reasonable standard fairly quickly. but next is the real big one. the final push that gets that last 5 strokes off your score regularly. during my first season i i certainly did trim those strokes off but not as consistantly as i would have liked. and hitting those crazy scores like buddah and snapjack would was well beyond me. this year has seen another step forward, i still have the very odd stinker but am pleased to say i can now regularly play almost perfect rounds ( birdie and eagle all possible with no ahos).
taking your game forward comes from like most things, practice. combine that with playing with better players regularly and on challenging settings and your game will inevitably get better. just look at last seasons leaderboard compared to seasons and u will see that everbody improves even the best.

I like this.. So.. I started TWii in 08. Made it through the offline season and was the karate kid. Thought I was the best around... Nothing was ever gonna keep me down... Started playing 08 without some cheats... Still did pretty good... Then 09 came out with online play... Just before buying it I saw TW10 was gonna have new M+ making the game more sensative and such... I waited for 10... Bought it day 1... OPEN, OPEN, OPEN. Since I was the shiz on 08 I thought it would be no problem to get skill lvls up... Being the fool I am, I started to do the challanges w/ Adv. swing... Whoa! very frustrating... Stuck with it Cuz I though that was how it was. Also thought ppl online where doing the same... I visited the EA site for tips and still not much improvement... Finally I bought WiFi and soon after revisited EA and found WiiGA. What? There is chat? Sweet! Still struggling I found that members were/are patiant and willing to help... THANK YOU ALL... Started using Standard swing and all the bonuses that come with it... Improvement soon followed. Then I, not having all my skill lvls up, bought a Skill Suit... It helped my shave 64 points off my Pro game. I do not wear the suit anymore. I have found that with out it now I am just a few strokes off where I was with it... My game has/will improve.. Also I have STOPPED crying about my game. Fine you are better. I focus on my game and find ways to reach my goal of TOP 10 WiiGA Tour PRO...
Thanks to all who have advised me over the last few months..
See you at the first tee

Well first of all, in responding to this thread in no way shape or form do I think that I am great. I like to think that I don't suck at this game and leave it there I got introduced to TW in '03 from a friend. He had a PS2 and I would go over there a couple times a week and we would play for hours.Sometimes his brother would join in and we would have a blast playing each other. My son at the time had a Nintendo gamecube so I eventually got TW 03 for that and was able to play at my own home in my spare time.Being a golfer in real life for twenty some years this game really grabbed me and hasn't let go since.I have every release since '03 and played them through until I got tired of them; but by the time that happened the next release was just around the corner. Then the Wii was born! if you remember it was released just before X-mas 4 yrs ago (?).My son wanted one, so did I, for X-mas.I managed to get one and a whole new world of TW golf opened up.I wore out my '07, '08 and '09 games. With the '09 version though there was a new feature....Online Play!!! I didn't play my first online game until January of this year..I was kinda intimated by the thought, but curiousity got the better of me.Well to sum it up...I ended up here! Whatever level of ability I have in this game is the result of 8 straight versions of TW golf and literally a 1'000 hours or more of game play. Whew!!! that thought makes me tired; I need a nap.....later guys.

I got my first taste of TW's Christmas 2008. As soon as TW10 came out I had it. My first goal was to break 30 through 9 as I thought that is what you need to win in sims. I joined WiiGA June 09 and set my goal for sub 55 and with the help of my new friends in WiiGa I consistently fire 55-60 with a new personal best last night of 49. That game is dedicated to all of you guys who have helped me.

okay mo-fos, here's my story......(by the way great thread dad) i bought TW 10 (my first TW game ever) in july. i even didnt open it until sometime in august. so i started playin online immediately as super tiger. then...........BAM!!!!! i found myself addicted!! i think was was ranked in the top 400 in early september. this is around the time i really started getting into it. i searched stuff on google about TW 10 and found the EA website. BAM!!!!! addicted to that too!! found boatloads of info and great tips from the jokker, jeffro, and MANY others... at this time i started a new persona (johnnyBALLZ). i wanted a new start with all the great tips i got... well i thought i would would be the next linkedin(jeff) or jokker. hahhahaahha!!!!!!!!! needless to say that DID NOT HAPPEN!! a few weeks after joining the EA forum LongHowie kept pushin and pushin for me to join the WiiGA. and im glad he did!!!(thanks LH!!). i played my first match in the WiiGA with MIS, jeffro, and trojanman... i was scared sh*tless!! i played ok, but that game made me very humble.... i still had a ton to learn.... well after a couple weeks in the WiiGA i went back to sim i got to the top 100 in a week!! (johhnBALLZ was already in the top 200 before that). anyway, thanks to dad, LH, sp, jeffro, trojanman, MIS,wayknow, and many others my game has vastly improved. and i still suck, i have well over 100 losses in sim!! just like anything in life u get out of this game what you put into it. practice, practice, practice.......... ok my wife needs to talk to me gotta go!!!!!!!!! -johnny

The Wii is the 1st game console I have had since Nintendo64 about 15 yrs previous and I loved the fact you had to actually get up and "play" the games. I bought TW09 in February after we got our Wii last Xmas so Dad would have a game to play. I played around offline for a few weeks and then discovered the EA Forums and all the threads about online play. I figured, hey, TW is the only game I kicked butt on against the wife and kids, so I should do pretty good against these online players. Wrong! Back to the forums. The DGA kept popping up in posts, so I figured it was worth having a look and see what it was all about. I checked out the site numerous times for a couple of weeks, absorbing the tips that were posted, the tourney settings and all the comments by the members. Finally in April I decided to join up and really see if it was as much fun as the players said it was. From the 1st time I logged in to chat, I was given the same warm welcome we continue to show new members to this day at the Wiiga. It was a little overwhelming at first chatting with so many of the names I would see at the top of the leaderboard on 09. Players like Snapjack, Buddha, Neil, NCD and many others. All willing to pass on tips and help out with my game. Special mention must go to my friend and fellow countryman Putterrr here. He spent hours playing games with me and giving me tips and technical advice. I shaved about 10 strokes off my game in the first few weeks with his help and that of all the other members then. I had joined with about 3 weeks left of the current season with 10 tourneys in it for a 20 game total. I thought I was pushing the envelope trying to finish up till both Stick44 and Jokker signed up with with pretty much only days left to complete. That last weekend needless to say was a marathon of tourney play to get everyone done for the playoffs. That same spirit of camaraderie continues here at the Wiiga and with the help of so many players here my game continues to improve, but more importantly, it continues to be fun to play. The names of the members here who have and continue to strengthen my game are too numerous to list, but you all know who you are. Thanks to all of you and all the members here for making this an extremely fun and challenging game to play. See you out there soon. Dude

We got our Wii for Xmas 08 and I got TW9 to go along with it. I hadn't played any game since Links2001 for the computer. I was so clueless that I spent 2 weeks playing solo games using Play Now before a friend told me I cold use the Career and Challenge parts of the game. I start my career and caught on quickly. As I got better and mastered the settings, I kept turning up the Wind, Green Speed, Fairway Speed and Rough to keep the game challenging. Well by the time I had reached full stats and thought about going online, I was using max settings in most everything. So I started my online career using Lobby games the same settings. I thought they were more challenging and made the game allot more exciting. Well after 5 straight losses because I couldn't figure out how to select my profile golfer (again, not too smart) I found the EA forum. Someone helped me get my player loaded into a game and I was off. As you might imagine, with max settings I won allot but in fairness, my opponents could see all the setting before entering my games except wind. There was one player who would enter my games and beat me soundly even with the extreme settings and that was Hoghead. From EA forum posts I learned that it was rude to use max wind so I stopped doing that. I never used the Play Anyone feature and it sometimes took awhile to get games in the lobby. If you got a game, 50% your opponents quit. You all know how frustrating that is. I was tired of seeing all the good players in locked games. Hog talked me into visiting the DGA. Everyone was very friendly and within 5 minutes of entering chat, I was off to Kiawah for my first league round. I was hooked. I played a fairly good game but there were some players that always seemed to have the edge on me like Snapjack, Wingnut or Riz. The biggest thing I notice was the distance of the drives. They could reach par 4's and I always came up just short. Neil (who joined within days of me) and Snap helped with my tuning and in no time I was keeping up with them. This simple tip helped take my game from mid 50's down to low 50. The next thing that was an eye opener was the way they played the holes. Snap would take short cuts that I had no idea you could do. I didn't have allot of experience on the different courses and had less than 100 games online, so it was by watching and learning that I was able to shave a couple more strokes off and rounds in the 40's came quite regularly. I played the game very simply and was convinced that I could help anyone else to shoot the same scores. I spend allot of time in chat with Neil, Snap, Dude, Stick, Twist, Clay. We shared tips back and forth and everyone benefited. I spent many hours chatting with those just learning trying to assist them in their Tw learning curve. One real enthusiast that stands out was our only Grama named Mama (wonder where she got to). I played allot of games assisting members and I now hate Wolf creek because I played it so many times helping others. So my tips to new golfers are play with different members and ask questions. You never know who has the one piece of information that will make the game click into place for you. Distance is key if you want to shoot the lowest possible rounds due to reachable par 4's and very long 5's. Practice and practice some more till you become familiar with where your ball will land with respect to your aiming circle. This is extremely important in shooting consistent low rounds. And lastly, become familiar with the courses so you can take advantage of short cuts. That was a bit long. Don’t have time to golf but can post an essay. Putterrr

My first virtual golf game was Links on my PC. I only had Torrey Pines and it was offline. I played it on my PC during my lunch break at work. It was great fun and I played a few rounds with other people I worked with. Not sure which version it was but I do remember being quite happy with a par, it was back in the early ‘90’s
I first tried Tiger Woods golf on the PS2 offline using TW04. I was hooked very quickly and began looking for any other versions in the discount bins at all the gaming stores, before long I had 03, 04, 05, 06 & 07. I played each and every one of them all the way through and was finally able to actually win a few of the PGA tourneys. By this time I was totally addicted and went out and purchased TW08 for my PS2 and built up my golfer again and played it all the way through
For fathers day in 08, my wife rented the Wii system from Rent-a-center so we could try it out. I was thinking it was a gaming system for children and was not to interested. She then brought me to Game Stop to buy TW08 for our Wii system we were renting. With much hesitation I went along with it and was totally surprised at how much fun it was using the Wiimote. This game was not able to play online so once again I completely built up my golfer again and 3 more for my friends to use. I played the entire game again and got several of my friends interested as well. My 52” DLP in the living room was incredible with this game, graphics, visability, etc. After the first week with the rented system I went out and purchased my own system with an extra Wiimote and a charging station
My cable TV guy who had become a great friend and played TW with me several times, he built one of the profiles on my system. Next thing I know he has his own system and comes to my house showing off his new TW09 game that had on-line play. I had been looking at this version but did not spend the money on it yet, this was late October and the game had already been out for some time. I borrowed his disc for a week and had built my profile golfer to about 80% and I had to check out on-line play for the first time. I borrowed his disc every chance I got. I did not know how to switch to my Profile golfer so I was forced to play my first 5 or 6 matches using Tiger
I got my AZZ handed to me in every match I played, my very first match was with glenmcd so you can imagine how I felt after that whoopin. I thought I was pretty good with the Wii TW golf before I got online since I could defeat all my friends. It took me at least 10 matches before I was shootin in the low 60’s, still not winning any matches though. I examined the Leader Board several times and memorized every name on that board, every time I faced off with one of those names I would get so nervous, my hands would shake and my match would not go very good at all. My wife purchased TW09 for my birthday in the third week of November and I was off to conquer the Leader Board, haha
I had my hard knocks when I first started, as we all must endure of course. I went through about 5 or 6 personas when I first started online play as I tried to improve my game. I would dump the previous persona due to the embarrassment of some of my match-ups and fire up a new persona to try it again. The shot clock was especially troublesome for me at first, seemed like I had a few shot clock violations every single match. When the tick, tick, tick started during the last few seconds it seemed to make me so nervous that I could not get my Wiimote to allow me to swing, bamm, another violation
After trying several persona’s I had about 100 online matches under my belt I was finally winning more matches than I was losing. At this point I had only been playing about 3 weeks and created my new persona to start fresh, I became Methos from the highlander series. I worked very hard, slowly gaining and losing rank. Up & down my rank went and I was finally in the top 120 in rank, then I finally hit the Leader Board for the first time. My record was about 120 wins with about 35 losses, I was so proud of myself for finally making it that I could finally see my skill points and such. My next match dropped me back off the Leader Board and had to play about 20 more matches to get back on it
As every ones knows, the manual for this game just barely mentions some of the things we could do with our Profile golfer. I learned to use my spin, I learned to use draw/fade, but I kept thinking about tuning my clubs as the manual just barely mentions. I finally found where the Club tuner was and I looked it over very closely. Since I was already fairly happy with my game, I was very nervous to change anything in the tuner, so I would go in and look around and then leave without any changes. So I finally saved my progress on my SD card so I could restore it if the Club Tuning screwed me up. So I went into the Tuner and started fiddling with my Driver. I would adjust one setting and watch what it did to my ball, then try another setting. I would watch carefully to see how my distance would change and also how bad I would shank after adjusting something. I went online and tested my new tuning, then go back and change it some more
I struggled very hard to finally get into the low 80’s in ranking and then I created a new persona to be able to play without worries about rank
TheJokker was born, haha. I played many matches with TheJokker, deleting him every morning to wipe out my stats and start over. While playing as TheJokker I would take some extreme chances to see if I could do it, over & around trees, over lakes that seemed to far, some really crazy stuff, some of which did not work of course. My game was improving very quickly after all those crazy shots, I was learning what I could and could not do
One morning my first match with TheJokker was from the lobby with AcesWild. I knew who he was and I was shaking like crazy as we teed-off to do a front 9 at Sun City (Gary Player). Much to my surprise, I took a stroke on the first hole, I got birdie and AcesWild got a par. I had played him a couple times with Methos so I knew it was not over by any means, he had beat me every time previous. We went stroke for stroke until the 9th and final hole, I was holding my 1 stroke lead, shaking worse after every hole. The 9th hole is an Island green, par 5 over a lake. It is very difficult to hit that green in 2 since the trees are in the way and you must draw severely around those trees to land on this green, and the flag was on the far left side of the green as well. We landed on the right side of the fairway for a better angle to the green, AcesWild was shooting very fast and made his approach shot while I was ligning up my shot, he made the green with a long putt for Eagle. I made my adjustments and took my swing hoping not to land in the water to lose the match, bamm, I landed on the green with a very long putt myself as I watched his putt drop for Eagle, the pressure is on. I took my long putt and it drops for an Eagle and the WIN, Woo-Hoo, first time to beat anyone in the top 10 and he was #1
Well, that morning was the last time I ever deleted TheJokker, it has been my main persona ever since. I have to say that using a persona without concerns for rank was the main thing I did to improve my game and take it to the next level. This allows you to test the limits, find out what you can really do
Good luck to all, have fun with the game, don’t take it so seriously. That is why the WiiGA League is so much fun, we can learn without any concerns for ranking, just our pride on the line

I will start by saying...what a great thread this is! My start with virtual/pc/gaming golf was called Leaderboard on the Commodore C64. (what some 28 years ago) I was just learning real golf at the time. I then played on the Mac classic but cannot remember what the name was. Very cheesy graphics at that time. I then became familiar with the original Sony Play-station (which I still have and play occasionally, Tiger Woods 2002). World Golf Tours was my next pc golf game. Then came Jack Nicklaus 4. There were also some coin operated video golf games I played also, the ones with the big roller ball you used to drive/hit/putt the ball. I then was hooked up with the Links 2001, Microsoft's version of virtual golf. I still play Links 2001 and 2003. Good games and there are several user created courses for these. I have several. Then, I bought TW 08 for the pc, but it wouldn't work on my pc because my graphics card was not capable of displaying. So 2 years went by before I got a pc with card that could play the game. I still load this game up once in awhile and play on-line. My first experience playing on-line was MSN Games w/Links 2001 and then TW 08. As for the Wii, well I started with 09 and shortly after joined the DGA near the last weekend of I believe Season 2 or 3 and completed 16 rounds starting on Friday and ending on Sunday night. I did finish the tourney. Then came TW10, which I didn't have and at the time didn't really have time to play. I am so glad I was able to receive the game from a WiiGa member. And recently, while waiting to get TW10, I signed up for Tiger Woods On-line golf Beta. Not too bad of a game and through betas 2,3 and 4 they have made great progress. I will still play more of the Wii because I believe that this game is as close as we will get to real golf simulation. Well, that's my virtual golf experience, hope it wasn't too long or boring, but thats my story and I am sticking to it! I am just here to play with everyone and hopefully be competative enough to play against some of the really good players. It takes practice and time to get good enough, but what does that really mean. Just come and play with a great bunch of WiiGa members and do not worry about how good you are, just play and enjoy the game. TheStick44 (Stick64) ;D
