if you are using m+ it appears when taking a practice swing. in theory you can make contant adjustments untill the tracer shows it holing out. its like an unlimited putt preview. however with the shot clock in sim play it is not really worth exploiting.

When your ball is off the green (or on it, for that matter) and you have a wedge selected as your club the chip tracer appears as a blue, white or yellow tracking line during a practice swing. Blue indicates a draw, white straight, and yellow a fade. This happens as part of the game if you are using a wiimotion+ attachment. If you don't have the attachment hooked up to the wiimote, the chip tracer lines do not appear.
