In essence IB is correct regarding mastering AM putt using putt preview. I am not sure that you will need the 2000 rounds I have played this year to achieve it.....But it does take much practice like anything else.
This may be over simplifying...but here goes. Go out and set up a couple of rounds in play now. Be sure to set mulligans to on. Also set up the rounds with standard swing to start out. Be sure you set the pin positions to hard at minimum. On every hole make sure to hit to spots on the green that you feel uncomfortable making the putts. If you don't make it to the tough spots...just take an extra putt to a tougher spot on the green. Since mulligans are on you should have no trouble redoing the shots until you are in the perfect spots to give the putter a good work out.
What I will be describing is based on using precision putting with the M+ attachment. I am not sure if the same methodology would apply to classic with M-.
The obvious goal is to consistantly set up the putts so when you hit putt preview it shows the ball going straight in the hole. Once you reach a point where you can do this at least 9 out of 10 times you will be getting close to what I think you are looking for.
Now the tough part. How to do this at least 9 out of 10 times. For me the biggest challenge was to make the down hill putts with lots of break. In this example the green speeds are set to average. The first thing I always do is note the % power to the hole, and then how much lower or higher the cup is. I base everything on % of power. Now you can go about determining the needed power in one of two ways.
Option 1. Use the NCD method....For every foot of downhill slope, you bring the arrow 1 1/2 grid squares towards you. For every foot of uphill slope you move the aiming arrow away from you 1 grid square.
Option 2. reduce 1.5% power for each inch of downhill slope. Add 1% power for each inch of uphill slope. This method may be very slightly less accurate but much quicker to calculate.
So once again you start with the aiming arrow in the hole. Note the power % listed on the screen. Make your power adjustment based on option 1 or 2 above. Now for the most challenging part depending on the amount of break (speed of the beads) which is to figure out how much to move the ball left or right. Remember that the greater the speed the less the ball will break. I view the cup as being 4" wide. It is actually 4.25", but that takes too much time to calculate. I will now estimate how many cup widths to the right or left are needed. In some cases the break is slight and therefore the adjustment is slight. I rate break on a scale of 0-4. I don't know how to define what I see to specify the range for each category. That will be something you can work out for yourself.
Once you have done all of that you now press putt preview. If it shows you are in the hole then you merely have to hit the ball the % shown on the screen. I believe you can be off by a couple % and it will still drop.....unless you have a category 4 breaker...then you need to be spot on. If it shows straight in the hole you are now 1 for 1.....only 8 or 9 more in a row and you are ready to use advanced with great success.
If you do happen to get the first one right....then use another mulligan and putt to another spot on the green and do it all over again. If you did not get it right for the putt preview then you can still make good use of it by seeing if you can accurately adjust how much to adjust. This is where the cup width of about 4" comes in again. The ball tracer width will match the cup width. If the tracers right edge touched the left edge of the cup you just need to adjust 4 inches. You get the idea. Or you can just hit mulligan and reset up the shot to see if you can get it right the second time around before pushing putt preview.
There is a much easier method for the shorter putts. I define short as 20% or less. I add 10% more power on up hill putts and 5% more on downhill putts. I factor in elevation first before adding the extra power. Then just based on experience I know how much to the high side of the cup to hit. Category 0 I will not add the extar power. Cat 1 I will aim to the high side but still inside the cup. Cat 2 high edge. Cat 3 half a cup outside on the high side and so on.
This is the best training exercise I can recommend. If this doesn't make sense feel free to PM me and I will try to do a better job of explaining it.
I will close by admitting something a little embarrassing that ended up being very beneficial. I went through all of TW08 and TW09 not noticing the putt preview option so at that time I did not have a crutch to overcome. When I first discovered it I actually started missing more putts than when I did not know it existed.
But once I got used to using it I had to go through the exercises above to get good at it in advance swing once again.
I hope this helps
