Here are a couple tips for putting with no grid, since it has been showing up more often in the Daily Events recently...
The biggest problem with no grids is the lack of perspective that the game gives you, unless the hole is at the edge of the green. Otherwise it just swims in a sea of green...
First, putting with no grid, and yardage markers off:
- Since there is an elevation number given you can just pan the arrow back and forth and see what the change in height is.
- If the height number increases the ball will break the other way as you move the cursor away from the hole, and visa-versa.
- You should check the break at the hole and halfway to the hole to help gauge the amount of break.
Second, putting with no grid and yardage markers on:
- This is much harder since there is no height information given to calculate from... But panning the cursor back and forth still provides information to help read the putt.
- Move the arrow back and forth and notice that the shadow (circle) under it moves graphically up and down. The percentage number in the box above the arrow also tends to jiggle up and down as well.
- This shadow movement gives you enough information to read the direction of the break and gauge how dramatic the break is, which is especially helpful for the minor breaks on the way to the hole. Very large breaks can actually be seen on the screen, but the subtle ones are the harder ones to pick up due to the poor graphics and depth perspective the game provides.
Hopefully this helps people to get the ball rolling in the right direction next time the Daily shows up with no green grid. Also, I will try to capture this in video over the weekend, or in the near future.
Peace,
